The Australian Gold Kangaroo coin series far outdates its newer silver counterpart. Introduced in 1986, the Gold Kangaroo began life as the Australian Gold Nugget series. The gold bullion program was renamed the Australian Gold Kangaroo in 1990 with the introduction of the Australian Silver Kookaburra, and has been available since then with new designs regularly featured on the reverse. The Australian Gold Nugget series began in 1986 as a means of promoting Australia’s vast gold reserves and the historical gold rushes that populated the western half of the Australian continent. With the Silver Kookaburra’s introduction, however, the program changed to the Australian Gold Kangaroo to bring it in line with annual release plans featuring native creatures.

All 2018 1 oz Australian Gold Kangaroo Coins in this listing are in BU condition. Coins in this condition have no signs of wear and tear, but minor flaws from the production process are possible. You may notice minor issues such as breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks.

On the reverse of the 2018 1 oz Australian Gold Kangaroo Coin is a new image for the 2018 release. This year’s design depicts tow kangaroos bounding across a rural landscape, with one seemingly hopping right over the other. Engravings identify the name of the coin series, year of issue, and the weight, purity, and metal content of the coin.

The obverse features the familiar right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Since 1952, Her Majesty has appeared on the obverse of all Australian coinage just as the monarch before her have in the United Kingdom and commonwealth nations. This particular design is the fourth-generation effigy created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley.

The Perth Mint’s use of an unlimited mintage means only that it will continually strike these coins to meet demand from investors through the end of the calendar year of issue for the coins. In this case, through December 2018.

Perth Mint is Australia’s oldest operating mint facility. Opened in 1899 as the third and final Royal Mint facility, today it is owned by the state government in Western Australia and enjoys legal tender status for its coinage through the Currency Act of 1965.
