What Is the Most Famous Gold Coin in the World?
Why the American Gold Eagle Is the World’s Most Famous Gold Coin
Precious metals markets have always included gold coins as a key element for many reasons. The coins are viewed as a tangible asset that provides investors with more intrinsic worth, with the American Gold Eagle standing out as the most famous one worldwide. Keep reading to discover more about this valuable coin, why it continues to be in demand, and why you should buy them from Scottsdale gold coin dealers you can trust.
History
The unique design dates back to around 1792. Referred to then as the Gold American Eagle, the coin was valued at approximately $10, and it was minted in British standard crown gold along with silver and copper.
The coin went out of circulation in 1933. However, the Gold Bullion Coin Act brought it back in 1985. During this period, the precious metals market changed significantly, and this specific gold coin became the most favored. It was subsequently referred to as the American Gold Eagle.
Throughout the years, this coin has been the most widely traded within the United States. Laws mandate sourcing gold for the American Gold Eagle and minting it within the US, ensuring it remains a genuine American coin.
Value
More than one million ounces of America’s gold coins are shipped throughout the year, including the American Gold Eagle. The most recognizable gold coin, it has remained valuable since its reinstatement, and more than 20 million of these coins have been traded and sold to collectors around the world.
If purchasing the coin outright, the price is around $2,700 for one ounce. However, in light of bidding within businesses and organizations, you can expect the bids to begin at $2,600 per ounce. One factor that keeps it high on the American market is being the only 22 karat gold coin that is IRA approved.
The premiums may be higher within the US Mint product lines, but to maintain a percentage above the gold spot price, many dealers repurchase the American Gold Eagle.
Design
The popularity of this coin is based on its combination of history and new 20th-century features. On the front of the coin, Lady Liberty holds a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. On the reverse side of the coin, a male eagle clutching an olive branch is seen flying above a nest containing baby eagles being secured by a female eagle.
Over the decades, the numerals on this specific coin have changed. For instance, between 1986 and 1991, minted American Gold Eagle coins had Roman numeral inscriptions. However, since 1992, the dates on the gold coins have used Arabic numerals. Both sides of the coin feature these number inscriptions.
